Uncommitted spotlight: Predictions on three West stars

The stretch run to National Signing Day has begun with the first of three January official visit weekends in the books. With Feb. 1 looming, we shine the spotlight on a trio of prospects from the West region with intense recruitments ongoing.

The latest: Lewis is the top-ranked wide receiver in the West and it sounds like he’s down to two schools with USC and Nebraska making the biggest impression with the Hawkins standout. He had a visit with new Oregon coach Willie Taggart on Tuesday and things went well, but the Ducks might be on the outside looking in. Lewis plans to take an unofficial visit to USC this weekend, then an official to USC on the weekend before Signing Day. He’s been to Nebraska numerous times, loves it there, sees an opportunity for early playing time and has built great relationships with that coaching staff, too.

Prediction: USC. Two visits in the last couple weeks before Signing Day could mean Lewis is making sure everything is in place for when he commits there or it might mean he’s still not sold and needs a lot more time on the campus and with the coaches. Our guess is that it’s the former since he’s taking his mother there for the official and he has had such a long-standing relationship with assistant coach Tee Martin and others.

The latest: Wedington recently visited Stanford and that trip went really well as he inches closer to a decision. After playing in the Polynesian Bowl in Hawaii this week, the four-star will take trips to Baylor and Notre Dame. A former Washington pledge, Wedington posted about his decommitment that he recently had been provided an opportunity too hard to pass up and he discussed how education was so important in his decision-making process. That points one way: Right to Stanford, doesn’t it?

Prediction: Stanford. Wedington had been committed to Washington for months but after Stanford offered and especially after he visited with the Cardinal in recent weeks it would come as a complete shocker if he picked another school. The four-star is taking visits to Baylor and Notre Dame, but those trips would probably have to blow him away for a switch to be made.

The latest: At the Army All-American Bowl, Calvin committed to Oregon State, but on Tuesday the four-star receiver backed off that pledge and will once again go through the recruiting process in the weeks before Signing Day. Nebraska has had a long relationship with Calvin and even though the Huskers just landed Tyjon Lindsey, Calvin would still be a take. In fact, Lindsey is working on getting him. Don’t discount Oregon just yet, though, and if he visits the Ducks then things could get more interesting.

Prediction: Nebraska. Calvin gets along really well with receivers coach Keith Williams and adding Donte Williams to the staff cannot hurt. After backing off the Oregon State pledge, Calvin is looking for a place where he’s most comfortable and that could be Lincoln. Oregon cannot be counted out, but we’re going with the Huskers going back into the West and getting another dynamic receiver.
