SEC Conference report: Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Game

MONTGOMERY, ALA. -- The teams at the Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Game took to the field on Tuesday for a pair of two-hour practice sessions. In addition to top performances there was also some notable recruiting news from the day's media sessions.

Here's a rundown of the top news and best performances as it relates to the SEC.

Recruiting Rundown: Henry Ruggs, who is considered an Alabama lean, had a nice first day of practice. He showed a surprising level of physicality and was not easily bumped of his routes. His strength remains his speed... Tide running back commit Brian Robinson continues to look explosive for a running back of his massive size.

On the field: Ruggs was one of the stars of the morning session before having a quiet afternoon practice. It was a relatively uneven day for the Crimson Tide commitments in attendance. Alabama commit Kendall Randolph was solid but less than dominant during one-on-ones.

On the field: Simply put, it was a massive day for Auburn. Linebacker K.J. Britt seized a leadership role with the team on day No. 1, breaking down the huddle before and after practice. He was clearly one of the most explosive linebackers at the practice and was incredibly disruptive during full-team drills... Wide receiver commit Noah Igbinoghene was the most impressive player at the morning session and made a handful of incredible catches during one-on-one work... Alec Jackson, who physically looks like one of the most college-ready players on either roster, looked sharp in drills and batted down a pass at the line of scrimmage during the team session... Linebacker commit Tadarian Moultry won all three one-on-one reps he took while four-star defensive back Malcolm Askew grabbed an interception during team drills.

Recruiting Rundown: A recent in-home visit with Florida assistant coach Kerry Dixon seems to have slightly boosted the Gators' standing with Rivals250 wide receiver Henry Ruggs. Alabama still seems like the team to beat for Ruggs, but on Tuesday he named the Tide, the Gators and Florida State as his final three schools. Ruggs plans to silently commit to the school of his choice and make his decision public on Signing Day... Florida will get an official visit from Alabama commit Kendall Randolph in January. The Gators’ pitch to Randolph is the availability of playing time.

On the field: Florida quarterback commit Kadarius Toney played under center but also took reps at wide receiver on Tuesday. It allowed him to show his versatility. All signs point to Toney being a major part of the team Alabama offense on game day.

Recruiting rundown: Five-star running back Cam Akers met with the media on Tuesday and said LSU is still very much in the picture to land his commitment. Akers spoke highly of new head coach Ed Orgeron and said he will be watching closely to see who the Tigers hire as offensive coordinator... Four-star quarterback Myles Brennan reiterated that he still considers himself an LSU commit, although he plans to take official visits to Oklahoma State and Cal following the dead period. The situation remains in flux and Brennan said he hopes to get some clarity when the Tigers hire an offensive coordinator… Four-star linebacker Willie Gay said he continues to have dialogue with the staff in Baton Rouge and is set to take an official visit in January.

On the field: Brennan had an up and down day, at times showing good arm strength but also struggling with accuracy on a windy day… Neil Farrell remains committed to LSU and had a decent day. He didn’t win every rep he took but looked impressive when he did. Farrell has solid size and gets out of his stance in a hurry. As he gets stronger, he’ll realize his upside.

Recruiting Rundown: Auburn commit Tadarian Moultry said he discussed an official visit to Missouri and had interest in touring the campus but communication broke down somewhere along the way. “Nobody from Missouri contacted me back, so I guess I’m done with visits,” Moultry said following Tuesday’s afternoon practice.

Recruiting rundown: Akers also spoke highly of the Rebels but was also guarded in his comments. It’s clear the opportunity to stay close to home is something that’s on his mind, but he said it wouldn’t be the determining factor in his decision… Four-star linebacker Willie Gay said he’s watching closely to see who the Rebels hire at defensive coordinator to replace Dave Wommack. He went as far as to say that if it’s not the right hire, it could eliminate the school from contention. However, he didn’t name any specific candidates he would like to see get the job.

On the field: Wide receiver commit D.D. Bowie showed flashes during both individual drills and the 7-on-7 period, making some big catches while battling some of the event’s best defenders… Ole Miss wide receiver Tyrese Fryfogle also impressed, and had some of the most consistent hands during Tuesday’s action.

Recruiting rundown: Four-star linebacker target Gay was spotted wearing Mississippi State gloves during both practice sessions on Tuesday and following practice said the Bulldogs are still a major factor in his recruitment.

On the field: Mississippi State defensive back commits Tyler Williams was one of the most impressive overall defenders for Team Mississippi in both practice sessions. He broke up several passes and was great at running stride for stride with some of the electric offensive players on his squad… Offensive tackle commitment Paul Gainer was by far and away the best offensive lineman for his team on Tuesday, showing good aggression during one-on-ones while also showing promise as a run blocker during team drills… A pair of Bulldogs defensive line commitments, Aaron Odom and James Jackson, also showed impressive flashes, as both are powerful pass rushers.

On the field: Four-star commitment Jordan Murphy made a big move up the Rivals rankings on Tuesday, and he did a great job of backing up the move with his showing on the field. Murphy is a smooth route-runner and has very consistent hands, something that will be a major asset as he fights for playing time early in his career in Knoxville.
