Rival Views: Who will be the No. 1 offensive tackle for 2017?

Rivals.com National Recruiting Director Mike Farrell and National Recruiting Analyst Adam Gorney don’t always see eye to eye. In this edition of Rival Views, the two debate the offensive tackle rankings and whether new 5-star offensive tackle Foster Sarell can hold onto the top spot at his position.

THE DEBATE: Will Foster Sarell end up as the No. 1 offensive tackle?

FARRELL'S VIEW: NO

I was as impressed as anyone watching the one-on-one reps from Sarell at The Opening and I obviously had a big say in his five-star bump and having him land at No. 3 in the country. But I’ll play the field on this one simply because there are so many elite offensive tackles in this class.

Isaiah Wilson is still a bit raw in pass protection, but he’s built like a brick, is a dominant run blocker and could play guard or tackle. Josh Myers is a physical kid with excellent feet and a nasty attitude on the field and is the quiet one in this group, a guy we could still be sleeping on a bit. Jedrick Wills could play guard or tackle, has amazing feet and uses his hands so well while Alex Leatherwood could be the guy who is rising the fastest when it comes to putting things together. Add in Walker Little, who is massive and physical with a great frame to build on and an outlier like Austin Deculus and you have so many guys who could close the gap. The top offensive tackle this year lands in the top 5 and it will come down to how they stack up in the all-star games all week and during their respective game. It’s that close and that deep a group.

GORNEY'S VIEW: YES

This offensive line class is absolutely phenomenal and Sarell now leads the way at No. 1 after an outstanding performance at The Opening, which really sold us on the idea of him being tops among the group.

We knew the 6-foot-6, 315-pound prospect could pulverize his competition in the state of Washington, but what I really wanted to see this summer is how he handled elite speed and power defensive linemen. Sarell dominated in pads at The Opening.

He’s an excellent physical specimen that the NFL will love, he’s a hard worker and has that perfect mix of an intelligent, pleasant kid off the field with an absolute mean streak once he puts on the pads.

For someone his size, Sarell moves his feet extraordinarily well, he’s super powerful and no one can beat him to the edge or across his face. What I’m saying is that he wins almost every rep and that’s tough to do in one-on-one settings without any inside assistance.

Sarell will be tested though, because this offensive line class is one of the best in recent memory. There are six five-star prospects and all of them are great in their own ways.

Wilson is just massive and still learning; Myers had a great showing at The Opening this summer and is just a no-nonsense Midwest kid with star power written all over him; Wills, Leatherwood and Little all had their moments at the Rivals100 Five-Star Challenge Presented by Under Armour and at other events to prove their worth.

But Sarell could be even slightly more special, and he proved it time and again by dominating at The Opening.
